HOW DID MOTHER'S DAY BEGIN?

Anna M. Jarvis, who was born in Webster, West Virginia, in 1864, is recognized as the originator of Mother's Day. Jarvis's mother passed away when she was 41 years old. Jarvis announced her intention to create a day dedicated to celebrating moms on the second anniversary of her mother's passing. Mother's Day was celebrated in the Wanamaker Store Auditorium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and "Mother's Day" church services were held in Grafton, West Virginia, on the second Sunday in May 1908, the third anniversary.

President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a day for "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country" in 1914, making the holiday official. The 100th anniversary of Mother's Day fell in 2014.
